Kenya Voluntary Women Rehabilitation Centre (K-VOWRC) has been responding to the need of women and girl sex workers and the growing concern of HIV and AIDS in the Kenya.

Research has shown some of the reasons that drive women into sex work are:-
  • Early pregnancy that leads to dropping out of school.    
  • Marginalization of girl child  - parents preferring to educate boy children
  • Poverty
  • Divorce / separation
  • Being widowed 
  • Lack of access to credit facility to start income generation activity
  • Peer pressure 
  • Being Orphaned
  • Influence from mothers/guardians 
  • National instability e.g. election violence, tribal clashes etc
K-VOWRC has been recruiting women and girls living within Nairobi and its environs. The women/girls happen to come from all over the country to the city of Nairobi in search of employment.  These women/girls live in slums and low income areas namely:

Kariobangi, Dandora, Mathare, Huruma, Githurai, Jerusalem, Baba dogo, Kiambu, Ongata Rongai, Kangemi, Kayole and Kawangware
