Kenya Voluntary Women Rehabilitation Centre (K-VOWRC) was founded in 1992 by Prof. Elizabeth Ngugi. This is when she was carrying out a research on infectious disease, and she came across women who came for treatment with different types of STIs at different times. On enquiry the women revealed that they were sex workers and that was why they could not come with their partners for treatment.

The Program has staff who are qualified and experienced in, Mobilization, health and business training, counseling and monitoring and evaluation together with carrying out research related activities. At the same time they are supported by a board of qualified professionals.

The reasons that drive women into sex work includes the following:

  • Early pregnancy that leads to dropping out of school
  • Lack of education due to poverty or parents preferring to educate boy children
  • Divorce/separation
  • Being widowed
  • Lack of access to credit facility to start IGAs
  • Peer pressure

K-VOWRC is has been recruiting women living within Nairobi. Specifically the women are in slum areas and low income areas as follows:

Kariobangi , Dandora, Mathare, Huruma, Githurai, Jerusalem, Baba dogo, Kiambu, Ongata Rongai,
Kangemi, Kayole, Kawangware

The women are from all the areas within Kenya and normally come to Nairobi in search of employment. When these women die K-VOWRC supports the orphans in various parts within Kenya.
Mission:
To reduce the transmission and impact of STI/HIV/AIDS by improving the physical, emotional, economic and social well-being of women, girl children in sex industry and AIDS orphans in Kenya.
